Fabric: 100% cotton 15oz ‘elephant's hide' indigo selvage denim

Fabric origin: Japan

Notes: These jeans have a kind and generous cut, like a sized-up regular fit. They have straight side seams to accommodate selvage edges, along with standard jeansy 5-pockets, yoke and button-fly.

The incredible 'elephant's hide' denim is produced by Kibata in the Ibara area of Okayama in Japan. As it's non-sanforized, I pre-wash the fabric before cutting to allow for shrinkage - which makes it quite stiff to begin with. It starts out as 15oz but sort of compresses after washing and gets even heavier - I'm guessing more like 17oz. It's very heavy, slubby and tough, but softens up considerably as you wear it in.

This style is available in limited quantities – determined by the amount of fabric on the roll. After you place an order, I will contact you to finalise details. Each order is made individually and ships within two weeks.

How to measure:

Using a measuring tape, measure the following around your body – or compare using a favourite piece of clothing.

A - Waist

Measure around your waist, or wherever the waistband of your jeans sits. If measuring on your body, allow an extra 1-2cm for ease of fit.

B - Rise (Front and back)

Measure from the top of the waistband to the crotch. This is really measured better from existing clothing as my jeans are quite loose and don’t ‘hug’ your actual crotch.

C - Inseam

Measure from the crotch to the bottom of the hem. My standard lengths are quite a ‘regular’ length, so suited to someone around my size e.g. 180cm high. Jeans have an extra 5cm added to length to allow for longer legs/scrunching/rolling up the cuffs, while work pants are designed to sit nicely without necessarily rolling up.

D - Hem

Measure around the circumference of the leg opening – i.e. where your foot sticks out of the pants.

Care instructions

Olijnyk clothing is intended to last a long time and fit into your life - not create more work for you. Having said that, these are some beautiful fabrics and if you treat them well, they'll age well.

All natural fibres will shrink a bit over the first few washes. To minimise this, I pre-wash most fabrics before making the garments. However, minimal shrinking may occur. Avoid clothes dryers if you can.

You can avoid washing for as long as possible to maximise the life of your garment and increase fade contrast on fabrics like selvage denim - there's a bunch of information on this available online. I prefer to just wash them whenever they're dirty.

I recommend turning garments inside out and washing on a cold setting with like colours - don't overload the machine. Set your machine to its slowest spin cycle - this is when the majority of damage is done to heavier fabrics like denim. Beware the dreaded white crease lines!

Hang dry on a clothesline or indoor rack. One trick to accelerate the drying process is to lay out washed jeans on a towel, roll them up and tread on the towel to soak up some of the water, before hanging out.

I used to be against ironing but now I'm quite into it. Use your judgement there.

Expect garments to be a bit stiff following a wash. The best way to soften them up is to wear them.

So, in summary: wash cold, hang dry, chill out.
